Kenward Vong started his research training as a biochemist with an interest in protein structure and function (BScH in Biochemistry, Queen's University, Canada). During this time, he worked in the lab of Prof. Glenville Jones and gained a wide range of molecular and cell biology skills. His main project was focused on analyzing the effects of mutagenic changes to substrate regioselectivity in vitamin D-metabolizing cytochrome P450s. Wanting to learn more, he then moved to study chemistry with Prof. Karine Auclair (PhD in Chemistry, McGill University, Canada). With an organic synthesis and protein science skill set, his PhD project was focused on the development of inhibitors to antibacterial resistance enzymes. With the opportunity to work at a world-class research institute (Postdoctoral Fellow, RIKEN, Japan), he then moved to work with Chief Scientist Katsunori Tanaka. Although he was involved with leading a wide variety of projects, his main research focus was to adapt biocompatible reactions for in vivo synthetic applications.
